2010 Lake Placid Camp MVPs

Scott Beauregard

Triathlon is a relatively new sport to me. I did my first sprint triathlon 2 years ago and have been hooked ever since. I signed up for the Hodska Camp hoping to get prepared for IMLP, get a feel of what it’s like to train with some great athletes and train with the guy that sends me workouts via email for the previous 6 months. The first day of Camp, Eric went over his 3 rules for the week:

  • No whining/have fun
  • Check your ego’s at the door
  • Enjoy the scenery

Morgan

Our first workout was a 1 hour and 45 minute trail run. I’ve only done one trail run in my life and most of it was paved! The run started and everyone took off up the hills, over the roots, hurdling limbs, through the mud, in the rain…etc. Eric said to stay aerobic but there was no way, I was practically sprinting trying to keep up with everyone. I was doing my best to abide by the 3 rules but after a few minutes broke them all. I lost my running shoe, I whined about it all filled up with mud. I could not check my ego at the door otherwise I was not going to be able to keep up. Enjoy the scenery? I looked 2 feet in front of me the entire way up the hills to the top of the run. We were in arguably one of the most beautiful places in the Northeast and I was looking at the ground. I totally thought that I was over my head at the camp and that it was going to be a long weekend. Then we got to the top. I was ecstatic! I was having the best time losing my shoes in the mud, getting rained on, getting whipped by limbs and bit by horseflies. The scenery was incredible from the top of the run and nobody cared who was first or last. From that point, I checked my ego and had the most fun I’ve had in a long time.

The rest of my time at the EH camp was spent swimming, cycling and running. However, they were not cupcake workouts. I do not know of any camps that climbed up Whiteface Mtn (pictured above) and then rode the IMLP course in reverse (up the BIG downhill). Each workout was great and followed by some EH knowledge about the course, triathlon and just general training tips. Everyone was supportive, gave great advice and was inspirational in one way or another. I could not have asked for a better camp from the other athletes, to the super sag support to the coach that put it all together.
