Athlete Of The Month Profile

  1. Name Mike Kane
  1. How long have you been training for and racing in swimming? I started doing triathlons back in the mid-80’s and stopped in the early 90’s.  Man, it sounds old to say that.  I started again in 2000 and have been going ever since.
  1. What is your favorite aspect of the sport? Until recently I definitely just enjoyed completion of events.  However, over the last year or so, I have enjoyed improvement.  For the first time ever, I have set more specific goals.  Completion is still rewarding, but I think I can do more.
  1. What do you consider your biggest athletic achievement? The most rewarding is definitely crossing the line in Kona last year.  The whole experience of training, race week, and the event itself was fantastic.

Others that come to mind are playing in the US Amateur Golf Tournament and fighting (boxing) in Madison Square Garden.
  1. What are your big goals?  I want to do two IM races this year.  I am doing AZ in a few weeks to kick-off the year.  The big goal is to do an IM later in the year, with a PR.
  1. What’s your favorite meal? This is a tough question because I love all food.  I would have to say a very, very large bowl of pasta with shrimp, scallops, vegetables, and oil accompanied by more than one glass of red wine.
  1. What’s your favorite movie?  I am an action movie junkie.  I have to include all of the Rocky movies, Goodfellas, the Untouchables, and Top Gun to name a few.  Some of the more recent are We Own the Night and American Gangster.
  1. Any other hobbies? I get to as many college football games as I can.
  1. Where is the best place you have visited? The best place I have visited was Madrid, Spain.  The combination of weather scenery, food, and people were terrific.
  1. If you could visit one place this year, where would it be?  The one place that gives me complete downtime is Florida.  I know that sounds crazy but, as soon as the plane touches down, I am completely relaxed.
  1. What’s your favorite workout? A long early morning bike ride.
  1. Who’s your inspiration? Dick Hoyt for the dedication to his family and sports.
  1. If you could train with one person for a day, who would it be? I would train with Eric.
  1. What three things would you bring with you if you were to be dropped on a deserted Island (not counting family)? Carbonated Water, Red Wine, and an I-phone to watch movies.
  1. Any other words of wisdom? I would have to say Relax more.
